POSITION TITLE: Executive Director

REPORTS TO: Board of Directors

PAY RANGE: $85-100K commensurate to experience

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Executive Director serves as chief executive of Leadership Toledo, responsible for advancing the organization’s mission, ensuring financial sustainability, and positioning the organization as a vital community leader in the greater Toledo region

This dynamic leader directs the strategic and operational goals for Leadership Toledo’s staff, programs, and finances while executing its mission. The Executive Director manages the annual budget and leads fundraising efforts to ensure financial stability. This role is externally focused, with a strong emphasis on community engagement, fundraising, and strategic leadership, while maintaining oversight of internal operations.

 The Executive Director partners closely with the Board of Directors and staff to ensure strong organizational performance and meaningful community impact. Additionally, the Executive Director maintains deep knowledge of the community by building and sustaining strong relationships throughout the Greater Toledo region.

 This role requires a balance of strategic leadership, financial growth and management, and hands-on execution in a small team environment.

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 Strategic Leadership & Operations

  • Lead the development and execution of a strategic plan aligned with Leadership Toledo’s mission and long-term vision

  • Establish annual goals and measurable outcomes; monitor progress and adapt strategies as necessary

  • Ensure organizational effectiveness through strong operational planning and execution

Board Partnership & Governance

  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors

  • Partner with the Board President to ensure effective board engagement and governance

  • Support board recruitment, onboarding, and development

  • Provide timely, accurate, and transparent information to support decision-making

  • Engage the Executive Committee as a strategic advisory group

 Financial Leadership

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Board, specifically the Finance Committee

  • Ensure sound fiscal management and alignment with approved budget

  • Maintain the financial health and sustainability of the organization

  • Oversee financial policies, reporting, governance and compliance

 Fund Development & External Relations

  • Own and lead Leadership Toledo’s fundraising strategy and execution

  • Serve as the lead relationship manager for key donors, sponsors, and partners

  • Strengthen brand awareness and elevate Leadership Toledo’s visibility and reputation

  • Ensure diversified and sustainable multi-year revenue streams

  • Accountable for achieving annual revenue goals

 Program Leadership

  • Provide strategic oversight of all programs and curriculum, including recruitment of participants

  • Ensure alignment between programming and organizational mission and vision

  • Support and coach program staff in delivering high-quality experiences

  • Identify and develop new program opportunities to meet emerging community needs

Talent & Organizational Development

  • Serve as a steward of Leadership Toledo’s culture, fostering an environment of trust, growth, and accountability

  • Coach and develop staff, empowering them to maximize performance and engagement

  • Build organizational capacity while operating effectively within a small team environment

 Community Engagement & Representation

  • Serve as a visible and active ambassador for Leadership Toledo

  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the community

  • Promote the organization as a key community asset

  • Represent and champion Toledo with executive-level professionalism, authenticity and pride

 DECISION-MAKING & GOVERNANCE

The Executive Director is responsible for day-to-day operations, staff leadership, and execution of the strategic plan.

 The Board of Directors provides governance, fiduciary oversight, and strategic direction, with approval authority over the annual budget, organizational strategy, and Executive Director evaluation and compensation.

 SCOPE OF ROLE

  • Direct Reports: 4 staff members

  • Annual Operating Budget: over 500K annually

  • Operating Environment: Lean team requiring both strategic leadership and hands-on involvement

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Leadership experience in the nonprofit sector.  5-7 years strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and resource development

  • Strong financial and operational management experience

  • Exceptional communication and public speaking skills

  • Ability to represent the organization with a welcoming, inclusive, and forward-thinking presence.

  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and manage high-performing teams

  • Track record of building strong community relationships and networks

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Deep knowledge of community issues, trends, and stakeholders

  • Experience working with or alongside a board of directors

  • Experience leading strategic planning initiatives

  • Ability to identify and own grant writing processes

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Champion the role of brand ambassador to Leadership Toledo’s vision and mission throughout the community

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed

  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation

  • Successful completion of a background check
